Jasper County Jail - Poor Conditions and Crowding to Justify Letting Criminals Go Free?

Jeff Hall left a comment to do an article on conditions at the jail.  I have no personal experience to draw from so can only write about things I've heard and things I seem to remember (but at this point in my life I wonder sometimes if I have dementia).

Anyway, for years we have all heard the stories about mold, and now I have been hearing about raw sewage backing up.  At one point I thought Mr. Bartosh had a firm come in and do repairs to the jail. So what did they do and how many tax dollars were spent?

Now some people say, if those inmates in the jail don't like it they shouldn't do the crime, and I tend to agree with you to a certain point.  However, they are still human beings and deserve to be treated as such. RAW SEWAGE? Come on!  At some point in time an inmate is going to be smart enough to file a lawsuit against the county with some big initialed group, think ACLU, etc, and it's again us taxpayers footing the bill.  And don't say the insurance the county carries will take care of it - the tax payer pays those premiums.

The waiting to get booked in is ridiculous in so many ways - the minute an individual walks into the jail under arrest/in cuffs they become a liability to the jail/taxpayer.  It would make more sense to get him booked in and bonded out fast.  Then there is the 2nd part to this - one of the judges only issues warrants that have substantial cash bonds attached.  Most of these inmates/families can't afford the entire CASH amount AND right now inmates don't mind setting in jail 3-14 days until they see that judge because odds are he is going to release them on a pinky promise... or if you can give up someone or more than 1 to the man in charge of Pre Trial Release you can walk out on a pinky promise and a handshake.  Odds are probably 75% in your favor of free release at that point.  If your unlucky enough to have to set until being "Bound Over" the odds are 95% in your favor of this judge releasing you on a pinky promise at that point.  Until this judge decides to get his head out of the clouds and set bonds people can make after being booked in, the jail will be 4 deep in a cell because word is out that you can get out for free.

As for the telephones -- I'd say that is a racket, did you know that bail bondsmen have to pay for the calls, yep when you are in jail and are making that call to a bail bondsman they have to pay for it and the jail gets a percentage of the money put on those calls.  Like I said before I don't know for sure but I do think I would be safe to presume the same would be applied to a call you are making out of the jail but to a family member.

Today the inmate count in the Jasper County Jail is approximately 244.  I believe the jail is suppose to only hold 180 - so there are 64 inmates too many.  Kinda sounds to me like this pinky promise and Pre Trial Release has backfired.

As for the meals -- I'm on the side of the jail, and if you don't like the meals don't do the crime, and be glad you are being fed -- concentration camps in World War II didn't feed the Jews.

Until next week - take care of each other out there.  Happy Trails.
